The Lonesome Gods - Louis L'Amour

My Dad has always enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour novels, but I don't think I've ever read one before. I have to admit I was shocked to find one listed on a beginning classics list. When discussing it with my Dad I mentioned that the Sackett's series by L'Amour was also listed in the Classics for youth list. Dad said, "Darn't I've read a classic, I was trying to avoid that." Despite the joking I'm know that my Dad has read many other classics and I hope that he will continue to join me on this journey.

I remember telling them(my Mom and Dad) that I was amazed by all the discourse on education, and the wonderful education that the main character received through reading of classic literature, even thought he lived in the deserts of early California and Nevada in the years before they became states. Mom's comment was that L'Amour's characters always were renaissance men.

I don't have the book in front of me and it's been a week or two since I read it, but I would have to say it was worth reading and I would like to read it again. Next time I read it I think I will have a pencil along to mark up my favorite passages.

In high school when I decided to read Les Miserables my Dad bought me a copy. He said when he realized how long the book was he figured the $8 books would be cheaper than my library fines. (It took me three months to read). I was so glad to have my own book because I did take the time to mark it up. Someday my kids will get to have a conversation with a younger me as they read that some copy that I did.

I'll try to come back and post a couple of my favorite quotes from "The Lonesome God's" later.
